The fear is that customers will feel fobbed off. The reality is that being ignored until Monday feels much worse than being answered instantly by software.
What customers actually object to
- 1Replies that read like a form letter, in stiff formal language nobody uses on WhatsApp.
- 2Wrong information — a price or a stock claim that turns out to be invented.
- 3Being stuck. If someone asks for a person and cannot get one, the conversation is over.
Every one of those is a design choice, not an inevitability of using AI.
Three rules that keep it comfortable
Be honest when asked
If a customer asks whether they are talking to a person, the answer should be straight, followed by an offer to fetch one. Pretending otherwise is what damages trust.
Never invent anything
A serious agent answers only from the shop’s real catalogue and cannot make up a product, a price or a discount. If it does not know, it says so and passes the question on.
Hand over cleanly
Complaints, returns, unusual requests and anything emotional belong with a person. The shop owner should be able to step into any chat with one tap and take over mid-conversation.
