Shop owners ask about the green tick constantly, usually believing it is the thing standing between them and being trusted. It is worth being clear about what it actually is.
The tick is a subscription. It is not awarded for having many customers, being in business a long time, or asking politely.
What you need before applying
- 1A number on the WhatsApp Business Platform — the free phone app cannot carry a tick.
- 2A verified Meta business account, which means submitting your company registration.
- 3Business details that match public records exactly: name, address, phone.
- 4A display name that follows Meta’s naming rules — no slogans, no "best", no keyword stuffing.
That third point causes most rejections. If your registration says one thing and your website footer says another, verification fails and the reason given is rarely specific.
What you get without it
This is the part usually missed. A number on the Business Platform displays your **business name** in the chat header even without a tick. To a customer, that is most of the difference:
| What the customer sees | Personal number | Business Platform | Meta Verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your business name in the header | No | Yes | Yes |
| Green tick | No | No | Yes |
| Business profile, hours, catalogue | Limited | Yes | Yes |
| Cost | Free | Free | Paid subscription |
Going from "+94 77…" to your shop’s name is the leap that changes how a customer reads the conversation. The tick is a smaller step after that, and it is optional.
When it is worth paying for
- You are frequently impersonated, which happens to well-known brands.
- You take payments or bookings in advance and customers hesitate.
- You are competing against several shops with near-identical names.
For a neighbourhood shop answering enquiries and shipping parcels, replying quickly and accurately builds more trust than a badge does.
